Sofy Bilaya is back with a new single, ‘And You’re in the Way (Demo)’, set for release on 21 March. Mixing indie-pop with a dreamy, raw sound, the track captures a moment of honesty and reflection.
This release sees Bilaya exploring a slightly different style. While she has dabbled in funk, neo-soul and pop R&B, this track leans into a more stripped-back, indie-rock feel. Inspired by artists like The Poles and Wave to Earth, it combines layered guitar, digital drums, piano and bass with rich reverb, giving it an airy, atmospheric quality.
A Song That Feels Like A Late-Night Thought
‘And You’re in the Way (Demo)’ is a little different from Bilaya’s past releases. Rather than overthinking the production, she decided to keep it simple and embrace the feeling of the moment.
“This is the first time I’m releasing a song that isn’t completely finished,” she says. “I wanted to go back to just creating and enjoying the process, without worrying about everything being perfect.”
The track explores ideas of control, self-discovery and learning to let go. It is about figuring things out and realising that sometimes you just have to move forward, even when things feel messy.
A Big Year Ahead
Bilaya has been steadily building her name over the past year. She played her first-ever headline show in 2024 and followed it up with a performance at O2 Islington. Her previous singles, ‘Satellite’ and ‘London Days’, were featured on Future Radio’s Songs Behind the Music, while ‘Decay’ made it onto ExpressFM’s THEMUSICPodcast.
She is also making waves as a producer, working with artists across genres, including in the K-pop and K-RNB scenes. Her visual work has been turning heads too, with a photoshoot by Elliot Dennison catching the attention of DAZED magazine.
With a multi-track EP planned for June, Bilaya is set to explore themes of perfectionism, self-compassion and pushing back against expectations.
