London-based music duo Planets have unveiled their latest single, ‘Winner’, a track packed with soaring riffs, captivating vocals, and an empowering message. Following the success of their previous releases, ‘SIGNS’ and ‘Red Earth’, the band continue to solidify their place in the alternative rock scene.
Guitarist Hector Castro describes ‘Winner’ as a motivational anthem, particularly for those who have been hesitant to chase their ambitions. “It’s intended to motivate people like me, who’ve been too afraid to put the work in and fight for what they really want in life,” Castro explains. “The lyrics come from the perspective of someone who hasn’t yet fulfilled their potential. It’s about taking control and building the life you truly desire.”
With this personal and introspective approach, ‘Winner’ serves as both a call to action and a reflection on personal growth. The song’s lyrical themes are complemented by its dynamic instrumentation, creating a track that resonates both emotionally and sonically.
A unique creative partnership
The songwriting process behind ‘Winner’ reflects the creative synergy between Castro and vocalist Charlotte King. Castro describes how their music starts with a melodic idea that evolves through collaboration. “When I pick up the guitar to write, I’m always searching for a connection—something that excites me. Lyrics usually come later, but sometimes words emerge alongside the melody,” he shares.
King’s role is crucial in refining these initial ideas. “Charlotte brings my ‘zombie’ ideas to life,” Castro says. “Almost every meaningful component is elevated to a really exciting place, and then it’s just a matter of decorating the tree.” The duo experimented with song structure on ‘Winner’, choosing to shift to a major key in the chorus—a decision that, according to Castro, felt like the song was guiding them in its own direction.
Since their formation, Planets have demonstrated an ability to craft thoughtful and emotionally charged music. Their debut single, ‘Red Earth’, was released in July 2024, followed by ‘SIGNS’ in October. Despite their short time in the industry, their rapid progress and unique sound have set them apart.
