Scottish post-prog quartet Idiogram have unveiled their electrifying new single, ‘Hyperaccumulator’, ahead of their highly anticipated debut album, Reunion of Broken Parts. Released on 22 January 2025, the track offers an intense, multifaceted experience, paired with a stunning video filmed in a Cold War nuclear bunker near Edinburgh.
Described as the album’s “calling card,” ‘Hyperaccumulator’ blends abrasive electronic loops with shimmering guitars, atmospheric piano, and bold unison riffs. Producer Graeme Young hails it as “the most obnoxious intro I’ve ever worked on,” a sentiment the band proudly embraces. The track encapsulates Idiogram’s experimental ethos, drawing listeners into their intricate soundscape where chaos meets beauty.
The accompanying video, directed by Tom Swift, captures the band performing in the historic Barnton Bunker, once an RAF Sector Operations Centre. The haunting setting ties seamlessly to the track’s raw, powerful energy, showcasing Idiogram’s knack for fusing sound and visuals.
A Journey Through Chaos and Calm
As the album opener, ‘Hyperaccumulator’ sets the tone for Reunion of Broken Parts, a project the band describes as a “mercurial and enthralling musical journey.” Incorporating elements of post-prog, electronic, rock, and classical music, the album transitions between moments of delicate melody and wall-of-sound intensity.
Band members reflect on the creative process behind ‘Hyperaccumulator’, emphasising its collaborative and experimental nature. Guitarist Ali Kilpatrick calls it a “weird journey from the acrid to the serene,” while drummer Keith Kirkwood highlights how the track emerged from separately crafted sections that harmonised into a cohesive whole.
Idiogram’s commitment to artistry shines in their innovative use of live synthesis, samples, and digital processing, resulting in a sound that is both contemporary and timeless. Their influences span from Battles to Boards of Canada, creating a sonic palette that defies categorisation while captivating audiences.
