Frenchie returns with her latest single, ‘Distance’, a stunning preview of her self-titled debut album, Frenchie, set for release on 28 March. The French-English singer-songwriter blends soul, jazz, and alternative R&B, creating a sound that feels both timeless and contemporary.
Produced by Femi Temowo, known for his work with Amy Winehouse, SAULT, and Gregory Porter, Frenchie brings together some of the UK’s most talented musicians. The album features Luke Smith (Corinne Bailey Rae, Chaka Khan) on keys and Ayo Salawu (KOKOROKO) on drums. Their contributions add depth and warmth to the record, making it a must-listen for fans of rich, emotive music.
Exploring the Complexities of Connection
Co-written with London artist Aaron Taylor, ‘Distance’ delves into how unspoken words and silence can widen emotional gaps. Frenchie challenges the familiar saying that “distance makes the heart grow fonder” by offering a different perspective—sometimes, distance leads to estrangement.
“This song explores themes of silence, unspoken words, and the passage of time,” she explains. “Relationships—romantic, platonic, or familial—can suffer when important things are left unsaid. Aaron and I wanted to create something that speaks to this universal experience.”
Taking inspiration from Minnie Riperton, Stevie Wonder, and The Meters, ‘Distance’ blends soulful melodies with Frenchie’s expressive vocals. The result is a track that feels both intimate and universally relatable.
Frenchie Translates Personal Growth into Song
The creation of Frenchie was deeply connected to her personal journey. While studying for a Master’s in psychotherapy and counselling, she set a goal to write three songs per term. Each track reflects different aspects of emotional growth and self-discovery.
“The process allowed each psychotherapeutic module to shape my songwriting,” she says. “I explored themes like mental health, self-worth, and balancing personal desires with relationships. Writing this album helped me process my own experiences.”
