Florence Sommerville to release new single ‘California’ ahead of debut album

Florence Sommerville is back with her new single ‘California’, released on 11th April. This dreamy country ballad captures a warm blend of heartache and hope, as Florence paints vivid pictures of escapism, longing and starting over. The song is the latest glimpse of her upcoming debut album, expected later this year.

Following on from January’s well-received single ‘(I’ll Be Your) Best Broken Heart’, ‘California’ builds on her reputation as one of the UK’s most exciting voices in country music. With her signature vocals front and centre, she delivers a heartfelt performance that feels honest, grounded and effortlessly authentic.

A Nashville dream written from three corners of the globe

Florence teamed up with co-writers Sally Barris and Francesca de Valence for the track, writing together over Zoom across three different continents. Despite the time zones, the three artists managed to create something that feels personal and poetic.

“To me, ‘California’ is a song about the perfect daydream,” Florence says. “It’s the thing you hold onto when you’re stuck in a job you hate, or going through a tough breakup.”

The melody feels sun-drenched and nostalgic, while the lyrics trace the emotional journey of someone imagining a better life far from their current struggles. Florence’s delivery is soft and graceful, balancing vulnerability with resilience.

Born in Orsett, Essex, she’s been performing since her early teens and writing music since she was 12. Her musical roots run deep, and she has built a strong following through headline shows and major festival appearances.

From small stages to the Bluebird Café

Florence Sommerville has performed at Latitude, Maverick Festival, and AMA Music Week in Nashville. She’s currently on her fourth trip to the city, with plans to perform at the iconic Bluebird Café. During past visits, she’s collaborated with respected songwriters including Gary Burr, Jan Buckingham and Sally Barris.

She has also shared UK stages with artists like Diana Jones, Tom Robinson and Annie Keating. Last year, she sold out Camden Chapel, and earlier this year, she launched her single at London’s Green Note.

‘California’ isn’t just another country ballad. It’s a reminder of the power of dreams and determination. Florence continues to bring a raw, honest charm to every note — and this is just the beginning.

‘California’ is out on all platforms from 11th April.
