Deaf Balloons return with re-recorded single ‘Gangster Lean’ and new momentum for 2025

Deaf Balloons are kicking off 2025 with a bold step forward — and a nod to their roots. The West Midlands alt-rockers are set to re-release a re-recorded version of their early track ‘Gangster Lean’ this April, breathing new life into a fan favourite that captures the band’s signature blend of raw energy and emotional grit.

Formed originally by Ed and Ben as a lo-fi duo, Deaf Balloons began with little more than a drum machine and a shared vision. That vision soon expanded, thanks to the addition of drummer Alex F, introduced by long-time collaborator Joe Albanese after a night at the pub. Over the years, the lineup shifted, with Ben briefly stepping away. However, Joe returned to help bring in guitarist Alex H, giving the band the dynamic sound fans know today.

A song of love, chaos and everything in between

‘Gangster Lean’ explores the emotional whirlwind of a passionate relationship that burns bright and fast. It’s about a connection so intense it borders on obsession — thrilling at first, but heavy with complications. As time goes on, things unravel, yet neither person can quite let go. The track captures that chaotic tension, where the bond survives not in spite of the drama, but because of it.

This new version of ‘Gangster Lean’ marks a fresh chapter for Deaf Balloons. The band are building on the momentum of their recent EP Coming Down on the Bathroom Floor, and the April single is just the beginning. They also plan to release a second single, ‘Funeral Suit’, later in the spring.

Ready to make noise again

After a pandemic-era pause, the group are more focused than ever. With Ben back in the lineup and a renewed energy in the studio, Deaf Balloons are set to re-establish themselves as a must-see live act.

Drawing from ‘90s grunge and early 2000s alternative rock, their music blends angst, melody and punch in all the right ways. If you’ve seen them live before, you’ll know what to expect — grit, volume, and a set full of songs that hit home. If you haven’t, 2025 might be your perfect chance.

‘Gangster Lean’ drops in April. Keep up with the band on Instagram for updates, gig news and more new music.

This year, Deaf Balloons aren’t just coming back. They’re coming back louder.
