Daphne Olympia is set to release her deeply personal new single, ‘Soul to Soul’, on 14 February. The West London-based artist delivers an emotionally rich yet uplifting track, blending elements of soul and R&B to explore themes of grief, love, and femininity.
The song serves as a love letter to Daphne’s late mother, inspired by memories and reflections on her life. With hauntingly smooth melodies and a vocal performance reminiscent of Jorja Smith and Sade, ‘Soul to Soul’ creates an intimate yet powerful listening experience. Through her lyrics, Daphne captures the many forms that grief can take while celebrating the beauty of remembrance.
“I love this song for many reasons,” Daphne explains. “I’ve never really been able to deal with my grief in any way other than humour, so I love that I’ve been able to create a track that I’m so proud of. It’s a way of remembering her as her authentic, beautiful, and sensual self.”
Her inspiration came from a handwritten entry in a book gifted to her and her brother after their mother’s passing. Compiled by close friends, most entries celebrated her as a devoted mother. However, one memory, written by her best friend Sarah, painted a different picture—one of a young woman full of life, working at Vogue in 1985. This recollection stood out to Daphne, offering a glimpse of who her mother was at the same age she is now.
