Casual Wednesday, the bold musical project of North London artist Natasha Petrou, has made a triumphant return after a two-year break with her highly anticipated rock-n-roll rendition of the Christmas classic “O Holy Night.”
Released across major streaming platforms, the cover brings Casual Wednesday’s signature mix of ethereal vocals and punchy instrumentation to the holiday season. The track serves as a powerful reimagination of the timeless 1847 song, which gained mainstream popularity again in 1994 thanks to Mariah Carey.
This rework of “O Holy Night” promises to add a rebellious twist to the season’s festivities. The song gently eases listeners into the Christmas spirit before slapping them with the heavy guitar riffs and layered sounds Casual Wednesday has become known for. According to Petrou, the single captures her personal take on Christmas music: “On the whole, I actually hate Christmas music, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and create a banger that brings a very old classic into the modern day. I wanted to give all the nans round the dinner table a chance to rock out and have some fun while they try to tolerate the overcooked brussels sprouts and dry turkey on their plate.”
The song marks a significant milestone in Petrou’s career, following a year of electrifying performances across the UK. Her mix of punk rock energy and witty commentary on modern life has made Casual Wednesday a staple in the indie scene. Petrou explains, “I used to sing ‘O Holy Night’ every year with my school choir, so it felt entirely appropriate that this was the song I chose to cover.”
True to her uncompromising ethos, Petrou has made the decision to keep her music off Amazon Music, citing her refusal to support the corporation’s business practices since 2016. “There is nothing less punk than not sticking to your morals,” she states firmly.
Casual Wednesday’s music is a blend of psych-rock, pop-punk, and sardonic social commentary. With a reputation for energetic live shows and a fearless attitude, Petrou continues to establish herself as an unflinching voice in the indie music scene.
