Hattie Whitehead Shares Edgy New Single ‘Machine’ Ahead of Debut Album Release
Rising UK singer-songwriter Hattie Whitehead has released her most daring single yet, ‘Machine,’ taken from her highly anticipated debut album Bloom, set for release on October 4th. The track offers a striking fusion of hypnotic electronic elements layered over Whitehead’s signature folk-inspired acoustic guitar. Acclaimed musicians Chris Pemberton (keys) and John Reynolds (drums and album producer) lend their talents, with Reynolds having worked with the likes of the late Sinéad O’Connor.
Described by Whitehead as “an ode to selfish, power-hungry people,” ‘Machine’ was written in the lead-up to the 2019 UK general election. Galvanized by the Conservative government’s prioritization of capitalism over human welfare, Whitehead reflects on political greed and disillusionment. “I created a daydream where those driven by greed rise to the top, only to find themselves alone,” she explains. The lyric “On your throne alone, you’ll die” encapsulates this poignant sentiment.
‘Machine’ is one of several protest songs on Bloom, an album that also delves into themes of loss, hope, and resilience, inspired by the loss of Hattie’s mother to cancer. The debut masterfully balances light and darkness, creating a bittersweet emotional landscape throughout.
Hattie Whitehead‘s sound blends the influence of 60s and 70s folk icons like Joni Mitchell and Nick Drake with the raw honesty of modern artists such as Wolf Alice and Kurt Vile. Having already gained recognition for her solo EPs and work with Hejira, Whitehead has earned praise from industry figures like Elbow’s Guy Garvey and has been lauded by outlets including The Telegraph and Jazzwise, who hailed her as “the greatest singer.”
In support of Bloom, Whitehead will embark on a UK headline tour in October and November, including stops at Brighton’s Folklore Room and London’s The Grace.
